Barcelona sporting directors are working hard to finalize their squad for next season, and renewing the contracts of players is a priority.
After renewing several squad players earlier in the season, the club has moved on to another key member of the squad, who has shown great versatility and professionalism in the eyes of the coaching staff.
As reported by Diario Sport, the Catalan side is very keen to extend a defender, with his current contract running until 2026.
As per the club’s policy, the club does not want any of its key players entering the last year of a contract, and this player is on that list.
Barcelona is now preparing a contract extension of three more seasons, which would see him stay at the club until 2029, and, as per reports, the non-official negotiations phase should move quickly in the coming days/weeks as they get into formal negotiations.
The player in question is Eric García.
His future didn’t look bright at Camp Nou just a year ago.
Following a loan spell at Girona last season, it looked as though he was surplus to requirements.
This had led many to speculate whether he had a future in Catalonia.
Hansi Flick, who blocked the Spanish player’s potential exit in January, has been especially impressed with García’s versatility.
The 23-year-old can play both centre-back and defensive-midfield roles, as well as right-back, and has proven to be a trusted option, applying himself well in key moments of the game has now convinced the coaches he could do a job in the team.
For García, the renewal signifies an opportunity to establish himself at Barcelona.
He’s aware of the competition for places, but has a mindset of proving himself worthy and fighting for the starting spot, and is excited about the idea of committing to Barcelona as both parties agree on the importance of García as part of the project.
Consequently, an agreement is just a formality, a rare piece of straightforward business in what will foreseeably be a hectic summer for Barcelona.
