Barcelona is considering taking legal action against La Liga president Javier Tebas after he allegedly leaked private financial information relating to the club without authorization.

The controversy centers on an April 2 press release where La Liga released information about Barcelona’s VIP box deal, which the club alleges violated Article 5 of La Liga’s Budget Preparation Regulations, requiring that all financial information provided by clubs be kept private.

This is not the first time Javier Tebas has been in the dock – he was earlier publicly reprimanded by Spain’s Administrative Sports Tribunal after Real Madrid complained.

In the opinion of sports law expert Miguel Ángel Galán, president of the National Center for Coach Training (CENAFE), Tebas’s action can be deemed a “very serious offense” according to Article 76.2.b of Spanish Sports Law, which governs the behavior of league officials.

Barcelona reacted forcefully with a public denunciation of La Liga and presenting its resignation to the La Liga Delegates Commission.

The club demanded the withdrawal of the offending press release forthwith and asked La Liga not to make any other public statements about the case.

The recent standoff is just the latest in the underlying tension between Barcelona and La Liga’s administration, namely over financial regulations and administration.

The result of this standoff could have far-reaching implications for the power dynamic in Spanish football, as Barcelona appears to fight against what it feels is discriminatory treatment at the hands of the league administration.

As each side toughens its stance, the drama continues to play out as legal analysts argue over whether Tebas overstepped his brief in publishing the club’s sensitive financial information.

Barcelona’s case against the La Liga president is a dramatic turn of events in their long battle for financial transparency and control.

The decision could redefine the power dynamics of Spanish football as Barcelona takes on La Liga’s leadership.
