Barcelona have suffered an injury setback after Andreas Christensen was forced off during the 3-1 victory over Sevilla.
The Danish defender had been enjoying an encouraging start to the season after finally putting a difficult period of injuries behind him.
Andreas Christensen had become a more regular option for Hansi Flick during the opening weeks of the campaign, making his latest setback particularly frustrating for Barca.
The 30-year-old had already started four of Barcelona’s first six appearances this season and had provided one assist during that run.
However, his evening in Seville ended early after he appeared to feel discomfort in his left thigh following a challenge.
Barcelona have now confirmed the injury, although the club has stopped short of giving a specific return date.
Medical tests have confirmed that Christensen has suffered a left thigh strain, with Barcelona stating that his recovery will depend on how the injury develops.
The club’s official medical update said he will be unavailable for the time being, leaving Flick without one of his experienced defensive options.
Christensen’s injury came during a strong performance from Barcelona, who continued their perfect start to the La Liga campaign with another victory.
He also played a role in the result before being forced off, providing the assist for Raphinha as the Brazilian helped Barça complete the comeback in Seville.
Barcelona ultimately won 3-1, extending their league record to seven victories from seven matches.
Another frustrating injury for Christensen
The latest problem will be particularly disappointing for Christensen given how much football he had missed previously.
He made only 18 appearances during the 2025/26 season after suffering a serious left knee injury in December, before eventually returning for the final league game against Valencia.
That knee problem kept him out for 158 days, meaning his return to regular first-team football had already represented an important step in rebuilding his season.
Barcelona nevertheless showed their faith in the defender by extending his contract in July, keeping him at the club until June 2028.
The club described Christensen as an experienced and tactically intelligent defender who has become an important member of the squad since arriving from Chelsea in 2022.
He has made 98 official appearances for Barca and won three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups during his time at the club.
The positive for Barcelona is that the latest injury is a thigh strain rather than a recurrence of the serious knee problem that kept him out for much of last season.
Flick will now have to manage Christensen’s recovery carefully, with Barcelona’s official update making clear that his return will depend on his progress rather than giving a fixed timeframe.
