Chelsea and Barcelona are said to be in a race to sign Santos defender Souza, who has been hailed as “the next Marcelo.”
Souza has emerged as a standout performer for Santos, progressing through the club’s academy to secure a spot in the senior team.
Having joined the Brazilian side at just nine years old, he initially showcased his adaptability by playing as a winger and occasionally as a midfielder. However, he has truly shone in the left-back position, solidifying his reputation as a rising star.
Former coach Fábio Carille was instrumental in promoting Souza to the first team despite intense competition, and his playing style has drawn comparisons to legendary Brazilian left-back Marcelo, who made his name at Real Madrid.
As per a report by AS, both Barcelona and Chelsea are actively pursuing the talented defender ahead of the next transfer window.
Chelsea appear particularly determined to finalize the deal, with plans to sign Souza and then loan him to their affiliate club Strasbourg to gain experience in European football.
However, the competition is heating up, with clubs from Saudi Arabia also expressing interest in the player.
Despite the growing demand, Santos are intent on keeping hold of their promising full-back and have begun negotiations to extend his current contract, which is due to expire in May 2025.
