Last month, there was a lot of buzz around Barcelona’s potential move to activate Nico Williams’ €58 million release clause from Athletic Club.
Despite the financial struggles faced by the club, Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, voiced confidence in their ability to secure the 22-year-old winger. However, conflicting statements emerged as Victor Font, former Barcelona Presidential candidate, disputed the claims, emphasizing the club’s current inability to afford Williams’ release clause.
In an interview with The Athletic, Font expressed his skepticism, stating,
“I wish we could sign Nico Williams because that’s what we need. The president has said that it is possible, but that is not true. Today it cannot be done. We hope that it will be possible tomorrow. But today, it is not.”
These doubts aren’t limited to the boardroom, as even Nico Williams himself seems hesitant to commit to the move this summer. The uncertainty surrounding Barcelona’s financial capacity to complete this transfer continues to cast shadows over the club’s ambitions for the upcoming season.
