FC Barcelona is close to finalizing a critical contract renewal for one of their squad player worth €45 million.
After a difficult few seasons plagued by injuries and uncertainty about his future, the star has returned to the forefront of Hansi Flick’s squad in 2024-25.
Previously, due to his salary, he was under an obligation to leave Barcelona, but after his contract renewal and being an important person in the club, he has returned to bring all sides to the table in a long-term definition.
As his contract is up in 2026, Barcelona does not want to head into the next season without a resolution, hence why this player’s renewal is a priority to retain confidence and sustainability.
The player we speak of is Frenkie de Jong, the Dutch midfielder that Barcelona bought from Ajax back in 2019.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, on DAZN, Frenkie is “very close” to renewing another contract and is not only comfortable but happy at Barcelona.
The 27-year-old captain has returned to form this season and has thrived under Flick’s broad system after struggling with injuries the previous year in 2024.
Romano suggested De Jong indicated in the media his desire to stay and to succeed at the club, and shut down speculation about a potential exit.
There has been speculation surrounding a switch in agents, with De Jong potentially terminating his representation from Ali Dursun, not to derail renewal negotiations.
De Jong’s revival corresponds with some of Barcelona’s other efforts to pivot their long-term vision for the club, including returning to Spotify Camp Nou and integrating youth by signing highly rated Pol Mancheno from Espanyol.
De Jong’s leadership and ability to play a variety of midfield positions are very important to Flick’s vision for the team.
Negotiations appear to be going well, as indicated by De Jong himself recently, and it seems a deal could happen in the next few weeks or months.
This renewal would keep De Jong, a central figure for Barcelona, in place as they aim for success, both domestically and in Europe.
