FC Barcelona storms into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a humiliating 7-2 demolition of Newcastle United.

The game burst into life early: Raphinha gave Barça the lead, only for Anthony Elanga to level and then put Newcastle ahead, before Marc Bernal pulled Barcelona level again and Lamine Yamal converted a late first-half penalty to send the hosts into the break 3-2 up.

In the second half, Barcelona unleashed havoc: Fermín López struck, Robert Lewandowski scored twice, and Raphinha added his second to seal a devastating victory, underlining Hansi Flick’s team’s devastating home attack and superiority despite Newcastle’s brave first-half fightback.

Here are the 5 things we learned:

1. Poor defending is still our biggest weakness

We conceded two goals in a crazy first half because our backline was far too open.

Simple through balls and crosses exposed huge gaps — Newcastle punished us instantly. If we don’t fix the organisation and marketing quickly, this will cost us against elite teams.

2. Losing possession multiple times kills us

We gave the ball away way too often in dangerous areas, especially in transition. Almost every Newcastle chance came from our sloppy moments in midfield.

This has to stop — we cannot keep gifting counters like that.

3. Transitions from attack to defence are still too slow

Every time we lost the ball (and it happened a lot), we were caught out of shape.

Newcastle’s quick forwards exploited our recovery runs. We need a much better structure when the press is broken.

4. Midfield lacks protection when we commit numbers forward

With so many players pushing high, the single pivot (or double pivot) was left completely exposed.

Newcastle repeatedly found space between the lines because our midfield didn’t drop quickly enough or screen the back four. We need better balance and coverage when we go all-in on attack.

5. Wide areas are too easily overloaded by opponents

Newcastle exploited the flanks multiple times because our full-backs were caught high, and our wingers didn’t track back consistently.

When the press failed, the wide channels became highways straight to our box. Defensive width and recovery shape need serious work.
