Barcelona secured a commanding 4-1 win over Espanyol at Camp Nou, reaffirming their strong position in La Liga.
Ferran Torres delivered a lightning-quick brace in the first half, netting a powerful header in the 9th minute and a cool right-footed strike in the 25th minute, both set up by the superb Lamine Yamal.
Although Barça controlled the game with strong possession, Espanyol pulled one back through Pol Lozano in the 56th minute.
Lamine Yamal scored the third goal, followed by a quick fourth from Marcus Rashford to seal the victory for Barcelona.
The home side stayed disciplined at the back to protect their lead and take all three points, reinforcing their spot at the summit of La Liga.
Here are the 5 things we learned:
1. The midfield stays composed and provides excellent control under derby pressure
With high possession, players like Pedri and Gavi anchored the midfield superbly.
They maintained structure, circulated the ball patiently, won important duels, and supplied progressive passes that fed the attack.
This composure prevented Espanyol from gaining any momentum and allowed the team to dictate the rhythm of the match, turning potential physical battles into a controlled home dominance.
2. Squad rotation keeps the team fresh and maintains high performance levels
Hansi Flick’s ability to rotate effectively ensured that key players arrived at the derby with energy.
The starting attackers and midfielders delivered a strong performance without looking fatigued, while the bench remained ready to maintain intensity if needed.
3. Defensive discipline keeps clean sheets against physical, compact sides
Espanyol’s 10 fouls and physical approach created some disruption, but Barcelona’s backline stayed compact and organised.
With minimal threats conceded, the defence bought time for the attack to click early.
This highlighted the importance of concentration and structure in derbies to avoid unnecessary risks.
4. Transitions from attack to defence are still too slow
Every time we lost the ball (and it happened a lot), we were caught out of shape.
Espanyol’s quick forwards exploited our recovery runs. We need a much better structure when the press is broken
5. Opponents too easily overload wide areas
Espanyol exploited the flanks multiple times because our full-backs were caught high, and our wingers didn’t track back consistently.
When the press failed, the wide channels became highways straight to our box. Defensive width and recovery shape
