Barcelona has locked in one of their brightest La Masia product by signing an 18-year-old midfielder to a contract extension until 2028.
The highly-rated midfielder, who has impressed following a transition to offensive midfield from a forward position, rejected approaches from several Premier League clubs to commit his future to Barcelona.
His new deal has a €20 million termination clause, which will rise to €25 million if he reaches five first-team appearances, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The teenager arrived at Barcelona’s impressive La Masia academy in the summer of 2015 and has had an impressive recovery from injury, and has grown to be an important player in the youth setup.
Once only an attacking midfielder known for his awareness and long-range shooting capabilities, he has transitioned to a deep playmaker, being compared to Sergio Busquets for his composure on the ball, calm defensively, and able to pick out a pass all over the pitch.
He is a player many of England’s best clubs are circling, but in the end, the player aspired to succeed at Barcelona, which helped navigate last week’s manoeuvring around his future.
The player involved is Tomas Marques, who has been a star for Barcelona’s Juvenil A team and is being promoted to Barça Atletic for next season.
Tomas Marques’ loan to CF Damm in 2022 didn’t work out because of injury issues, but he appears to have put that part of his footballing career behind him.
In midfield, he showed maturity along with tactical intelligence, and he truly has come back stronger.
For Barcelona to lock him down with a high release clause shows they believe he can break into the first team very soon.
Marqués is yet another exciting product of La Masia, with technical ability, physical growth, and adaptability.
Whilst Premier League teams may suggest we will see them again in future offers, it appears Barcelona wants to renew their deal and continue to develop their talent rather than sell them.
For now, Marques’ focus will be on continuing to develop as a player and maybe following in the footsteps of midfield greats before him.
