Since December, Frenkie de Jong has made a surprising return to the squad, something that looked unlikely during the start of Hansi Flick’s reign.

This return was mainly due to injuries, however, De Jong has taken the chance with both hands and shown his quality.

Due to now being a solid starting option for Flick, the Dutchman has reportedly made a decision about his future according to Mundo Deportivo

The article states that the 27-year-old now wants to extend his deal at Barcelona, which is set to end in the summer of 2026.

It is stated that this change in mind is due to the trust that Flick is showing him as well as the ‘project’ that the German has started at the Catalonian side.

De Jong still believes he should ‘earn a good salary’ but he is now more focused on the project and winning trophies, potentially opening the door for him to decrease his wages.

The Dutch international is Barca’s second highest earner, on a salary of €365k per week, a sum that the Blaugrana are trying to avoid giving players unless they are the best in the world in their position.

Finally, the report states that contact discussions could take place in March or April, a timescale that looks set to work for both parties as the impact of De Jong’s influence can be measured more precisely.
