After Marc-Andre Ter Stegen picked up a season-ending injury, a lot of people were concerned about the quality of Barca’s backups.

Iñaki Peña had not been tested at the top level so as a precaution, the Blaugrana signed Wojciech Szczęsny who had come out of retirement to join the Spanish side.

Despite signing the former Arsenal and Juventus keeper, Hansi Flick kept faith in Peña and he has been the first choice since Ter Stegen’s injury.

Unfortunately for the 25-year-old keeper, he was late for training on numerous occasions, something the German coach punished him for, eventually dropping him in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final and final.

During those games the Polish shot-stopper impressed, making some important saves, however, he did get sent off in the final against Real Madrid.

Due to these recent performances with Szczęsny in goal, it cast some doubt on who would be starting in that position going forward.

Laia Tudel, via Managing Barca, has recently reported that Flick sees the Polish international as ‘one step above’ Peña.

However, the report states that the German coach is still satisfied with the Spanish goalkeeper’s performances.

Even though Peña has been good, Szczęsny has proven for many years he can perform at the top level, something that gives him the edge over the Peña.
