Early this morning, there was some surprising news with regards to Ronald Araújo, who looked set to leave Barcelona this January.

The Uruguayan has been receiving a lot of interest from Juventus, with the Blaugrana even turning down a bid worth €35million.

Juve were set to return with an improved offer as the Uruguayan had reportedly communicated to both clubs his desire to leave Barça this window.

However, last night, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco made a massive breakthrough and convinced Araújo to remain at the club.

Hansi Flick and his teammates wanting him to stay also made a huge impact and convinced the 25-year-old how valued he is at the Catalonian side.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Barça and Araújo have agreed, in principle, on a new contract at the club.

Talks reportedly progressed really well between the pair last night and the formal contract details are set to be discussed in the coming days.

This is really positive news for Barcelona and Flick as Araújo is still one of the best defenders in world football and losing him for a discounted price would have been devastating.

Thankfully, Barça fans can now expect to see the Uruguayan centre-back lead the backline for many years to come.
