Barcelona ‘considering’ selling player worth €45m that Hansi Flick cannot ‘count on’

It seems like the future of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong hangs in the balance this January.

When Barcelona signed Frenkie de Jong from Ajax in 2019 for a reported fee of €86million, he was touted to be the next big thing.

Unfortunately, due to injuries, numerous different managers and the lack of regular first-team minutes, De Jong’s time in Spain has been very lacklustre.

It now looks like his time at Barça is set to come to an end as SPORT, via Managing Barca on X, have claimed that Hansi Flick does not ‘count on him’.

The Dutch midfielder has only played 15 times for Barcelona this season, with a large majority of those appearances coming off the bench.

Due to this lack of game time and the fact that his contract is set to expire in 2026, the Blaugrana are now considering selling De Jong this January transfer window.

If Barça can get his yearly wage of €19million off the books, as well as get a decent fee, Transfermarkt values the 27-year-old at €45million, it could open the door for potential incomings that Flick could use to continue challenging Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid to the La Liga title.

Of course, De Jong would need to approve any move away, something he has a history of not doing.

However, this time seems different as it is very clear that Flick has no long-term plans for the Dutch international in his midfield.

For his own good, it might be worth the former Ajax star looking for another club to help regain his former glory.
