Jonathan Tah, the center-back for Bayer Leverkusen, was close to leaving the club this summer, as a possible move to Bayern Munich did not materialize.

His contract is set to expire next summer, hinting that he may start searching for a new club soon. At the age of 28, Tah will be eligible to enter into a pre-contract agreement in January.

Despite Bayern’s continued interest, reports from Sport indicate that they are no longer the leading contenders to secure the signature of the German international.

Barcelona expressed late interest in Tah in August and have maintained communication with his representatives, establishing themselves as a leading candidate. However, the club currently has a surplus of defensive options, including Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, and Andreas Christensen.

In order for Tah to be included, it is probable that one of the current defenders will need to leave, especially considering that the contracts of the other two are set to expire within the next few years.

The club must make a decision within the next six to nine months regarding extending their contracts or selling. A key consideration could be Tah’s representative, Pini Zahavi, who has a close relationship with Barcelona.

The Catalan club may have an edge with this connection, despite encountering obstacles in finalizing his signing.
