FC Barcelona is allegedly facing a state of puzzlement regarding Frenkie de Jong’s recent conduct, as indicated by an AS article citing unnamed insiders.

There is a growing suspicion within the club that De Jong might be deliberately allowing his contract to expire, with the intention of departing on a free transfer in mid-2026.

During the recent Joan Gamper Trophy match, De Jong received a frosty reception from some Barcelona supporters.

When he was introduced, a segment of the crowd voiced their dissatisfaction through jeers and whistles, like the reaction directed at Clement Lenglet.

This response likely mirrors frustration with their hefty salaries, which have been inflated by deferred payments from the pandemic period that are now due in addition to their standard wages for the 2024/2025 season.

AS also asserts that De Jong is posing “more of a challenge than a resolution” for Barcelona on multiple fronts. Following his return from vacation, De Jong was purportedly “notably out of condition,” and he has reportedly rebuffed all efforts by the club to address his contractual situation.

Unnamed sources within the club conveyed to AS that it remains uncertain when De Jong will be ready to play again under coach Hansi Flick, particularly with Pedri and Gavi also sidelined due to injuries.

His perceived lack of urgency and divergent pace compared to his teammates has seemingly left the club in a state of disarray.
