La Masia has been the backbone of the club for ages. In 2010, the most prestigious award in football, the Ballon d’Or had its top 3 players named; Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, and Andrea Iniesta, all of whom came from La Masia.
In recent times, Barca’s academy has produced top talent like Gavi, Balde, etc. As always under Xavi as well there have been a few bright youth products from the academy. Especially, during current financial circumstances La Liga champion strongly needs support from its academy.
On this note, let’s take a look at some of the latest products of La Masia Academy who could light up the football world in coming seasons:-
Lamine Yamal
16-year-old winger Lamine Yamal needs no introduction. Yamal made his first-team debut on 29 April 2023 in a 4-0 win against Real Betis. Spanish teenager then earned his first start for the club on 20 August 2023 in a 2–0 victory over Cadiz making him the youngest starter for Barcelona in La Liga at the age of 16 years and 38 days. In his short career, he is the youngest player to score a league goal for Barcelona and the whole of La Liga. Yamal has his contract with Barcelona until 2026, with a buyout clause of €1 billion.
Fermin Lopez
During pre-season, Barcelona played their arch-rival Real Madrid on 29 July 2023, which they won comfortably by a 3-0 scoreline. That game saw the birth of a future superstar made in La Masia academy, named Fermin Lopez. He scored a wonderful goal from outside of the box and provided an assist. Since then he has been regular for Xavi’s team’s midfield. On 27 August 2023, López made his La Liga debut for Barcelona in a 4–3 away win over Villareal CF. He already featured for Barcelona in 14 league games scoring one goal.
Pau Cubarsi
The very latest youth product from La Masia is 17-year-old center-back Pau Cubarsi. Known for his calm nature and very composed on the ball, he trained with Barcelona’s first team in April 2023 under Xavi. After being selected for the 2023/24 pre-season, Cubarsi finally got his first team debut on 19 January 2024, against Unionistas de Salamanca in the Copa del Rey. Then in the very next game against Real Betis in La Liga, he got into the starting XI.
Hector Fort
Another bright defender who burst into the scene very few weeks ago. Born in Bacelona, Fort signed for La Masia from PB Anguera. Like Cubarsi, he also was in the pre-season squad for Barcelona before featuring for the first team in a friendly match against Vissel Kobe on 6 June 2023. Finally, Fort made his senior debut for the first team on 13 December 2023 in a 3–2 away defeat against Royal Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League. Since his debut, the versatile defender, who can play both right and left-back positions with ease, has been a very regular feature in Barcelona’s defense line.
Marc Guiu
Guiu, who began his career with Penya Barcelonista Sant Celoni, went on to join Barcelona themselves in the 2013–14 season. The 18-year-old La Masia star plays as a striker. He too was called by coach Xavi for the 2023/24 pre-season. Guiu made his unofficial debut for Barcelona against Vissel Kobe on 6 June 2023. 2006-born star finally got his first team debut on 22 October against Athletic Bilbao, scoring the winner within 23 seconds in a 1-0 win after coming in as 79th-minute substitute. At only 17 years and 291 days of age, he became the youngest and fastest debutant to score for Barcelona in La Liga.
