Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny revealed that a phone call from Robert Lewandowski was influential in his choice to end his retirement and sign with Barcelona.
At the age of 34, Szczesny made news by retiring in August and ending his seven-year contract with Juventus.
Despite declining an offer to be a backup for David Raya at Arsenal, he promptly re-entered the game when Barcelona’s captain, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, suffered a severe knee injury during a 5-1 win against Villarreal.
With Inaki Pena as the only senior goalkeeper option, Lewandowski, a friend from the Polish national team, quickly contacted Szczesny regarding a free transfer.
“He was the initial person to reach out to me regarding the potential of making a comeback, considering my retirement,” Szczesny revealed to Barcelona’s media team.
“At first, I was not prepared for fresh endeavors, but following conversations with my family and friends, they all encouraged me to seize the chance. Robert played a crucial role in persuading me to make this decision.”
