Tottenham Hotspur will make an offer for a Barcelona defender to shore up their defense before the new season.
The North London outfit has identified the 24-year-old as a defender to aid them in fixing their defense problem, and the negotiations are bound to be accelerated within the next two weeks.
Although incredibly highly rated technically and in terms of versatility—able to play both central defense and defensive midfield—the Spanish international has failed to establish himself in the first team.
His role has been called into doubt under successive managers, initially Xavi Hernández and now Hansi Flick in charge.
According to Fichajes, the player is Eric Garcia, a Barcelona La Masia academy graduate who returned to Camp Nou in 2021 after four years with Manchester City.
Whereas the Catalan giants valued the player at around €20 million, the Spurs desire to strike a deal at closer to €15 million.
Although Flick is said to value his tactical awareness and flexibility, Barcelona’s financial situation means they can be tempted to sell if the right offer is made.
For Tottenham, the defender offers an interesting proposition – a Premier League-tested player who is still young enough to improve, and who can be signed for relatively low cost compared to other targets.
The potential switch would benefit both parties. Barcelona would receive the money to enhance other areas of their squad, while Tottenham would obtain a ball-playing central defender comfortable with the ball, a type that aligns with their under Ange Postecoglou.
For Garcia himself, the switch would mean consistent first-team action at the height of his career, with the opportunity to re-establish himself once more in the English top division following his inconsistent spell at Manchester City.
As the summer window draws near, this move can pick up pace, particularly if Barcelona are forced to balance their finances or Tottenham lose out on other defensive targets.
The next few weeks will decide whether the two clubs can close the valuation gap and if the player himself is willing to start a new chapter in London.
