Barcelona is close to extending manager Hansi Flick for a new contract, but the German manager has a preference for a short-term, adaptable contract over a multi-year deal.
Flick is not keen on a standard multi-year extension, as the club is keen to tie him down to the club for the long term.
According to Liga Olahraga, the 60-year-old will, therefore, execute a one-year contract with a second-season option, which will keep him in Camp Nou at least until 2027.
Hansi Flick has impressed with an immediate impact since taking charge, revamping Barcelona’s performances and style within a very short space of time.
Club bosses, president Joan Laporta, and sporting director Deco desire to retain him, but the former Bayern Munich coach is less enthusiastic.
He is set to look at where the project is going before he agrees to an extension of his deal past 2027, consistent with his reputation as a frugal organizer.
There has already been some talks between his representative, agent Pini Zahavi, and Barcelonaa bosses, the two parties said to be on the same wavelength when it comes to the offer package.
While successful, Flick is not viewing Barcelona as a long-term project.
For the time being, at least, however, he is utterly absorbed in the short-term task at hand, with club, team, and city of Barcelona all surpassing his expectations.
The proposed 1+1 contract is a realistic middle ground for both parties—Barcelona provides stability, and Flick preserves flexibility.
Should it be agreed upon, the agreement would introduce stability ahead of a make-or-break season but leave room for potential alterations based on the performance of the team.
For now, Hansi Flick’s priority is to extend his good beginning, and contract talks will be completed in the coming days.
