Last night’s game was hectic in many ways, from the terrible defending to the great attacking play, from both sides.

From a defensive point of view, both left-backs were fairly solid and Barça’s Alejandro Balde impressed once again for Hansi Flick’s side.

However, Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras was a real standout in defence for the Portuguese side, even getting an assist in their 5-4 loss.

After the game, Sport reported that Deco and his scouting team have been monitoring the 21-year-old full-back since the start of the season.

It is claimed that the Barcelona Sporting Director received news of his impressive level of play last campaign and has been following him ever since.

Unfortunately, any move might be an impossible task for the Spanish side, even if they see him as a great option for the club’s next big sporting project.

According to the report, Benfica know they have a gem and will not take anything less than his €50million release clause, a fee that looks set to put Barca off any potential transfer.

The 21-year-old’s former club, Manchester United, are interested in him and could resign the defender for around €20million, but he would have to agree to return, something that seems unlikely currently.

There is no rush for Carreras to join a top side straight away, he is still very young and staying at Benfica could allow him to develop, similar to what other stars of the Portuguese outfit have done over the years.

One thing is for certain though, if he continues with his current displays, any top club will be very lucky to have him, especially for the price tag, which in today’s market seems like a bargain.
