Heading into this season, one of the positions that Barcelona had an abundance of options was at centre-back.

Whilst it was expected that Hansi Flick would have Ronald Araújo lead his backline, due to an injury before the season started, the German coach decided to go with the duo of Pau Cubrasí and Iñigo Martínez.

Due to this lack of game time, Araújo has been receiving interest from abroad and looks set to join Juventus this month.

Eric Garcia was also linked with a move to Girona, however, due to potentially losing a centre-back, the former Manchester City player is expected to stay for the remainder of the campaign.

Another player who was also rumoured to be available was Andreas Christensen, who injured his Achilles in August.

However, similar to Garcia, it would be a surprise if Flick and Barça choose to let him leave this month.

Christensen’s future was basically sealed after Martínez picked up an injury in the Super Cup final that is set to keep him out for at least a month.

Thankfully, it looks like the former Chelsea defender’s return is due sooner rather than later, handing the squad a much-needed boost in defence.

Speaking in his press conference, via Managing Barca, ahead of the Cop Del Rey tie against Real Betis, Flick explained that the Danish defender should be back very soon.

“Christensen will be back on Saturday. He will be available for the Getafe match.”

Even though the 28-year-old is definitely a backup, any more potential injuries could see him return to the starting lineup, meaning his return to fitness has come at an ideal time for Flick.
