Blaugrana History

Founded on 29th November 1899 by Joan Gamper, Barcelona flag wave’s high for last 123 years of its existence. Since the early days FC Barcelona jersey had blaugrana colors. Little by little barca grew and thus we won our first title Macaya trophy in 1902, Barca won their first Championship League in 1928-29 season. FC Barcelona built their first stadium of capacity 6,000 people in 1909.

Little by little barca grew and thus we won our first title Macaya trophy in 1902, Barca won their first Championship League in 1928-29 season. FC Barcelona built their first stadium of capacity 6,000 people in 1909. Due to increasing popularity in 1920’s, in 1922 the ‘Les Corts’ stadium was built with a capacity of 22,000 people and finally in 1957 Camp Nou was built with the initial capacity of 90,000 people.

FC Barcelona significantly changed with the arrival of one Dutch player and later manager Johan Cryuff. Cruyff arrived at the club in 1973. Before his arrival Barca had not won league title in 14 years and in his first year at the club barca won the league title. He had offers from Real Madrid and his previous club Ajax preferred Real but cruyff snubbed Madrid for barca.

The first argentine superstar signed for barca “Diego Armando Maradona”. Maradona joined barca in 1982, he was at blaugrana side till 1984. His time at barca was contitioned by hepatitis and serious injuries still argentine managed to win 1 league cup, 1 copa del rey and 1 Spanish super cup with barca.

Cruyff arrived as a manager at the catalan side in 1988. Under cryuff Barca began its first most successful stages of history, in 1992 cryuff led barca to their first European Cup in their history, Barca won 4 Laliga titles back to back between 1990 to 1994. They called this team “The Dream Team”. Some famous players from this team were “Koeman”, “Guardiola”. Cryuff managed Barca till 1996 for 8 whole seasons. Cryuff won 11 trophies as a manager most by a manager at that time and became longest consecutive serving manager for Barcelona.

For 1996-97 season Ronaldo Nazario joined barca. Playing as a striker Ronaldo scored whopping 47 goals in 51 appearances for Barca before he left to join inter milan for world class fee at that time.

In 2003 Brazilian magician Ronaldinho joined barca and thus modern blaugrana era began. During his time at barca Ronaldinho won 2 Laliga and a Champions league title. Also he won prestigious ballon dor in 2005. Ronaldinho brought back joy for the cules. His brilliant footballing skills were amazing to watch. During classico of 2005 barca humbled madrid in their own stadium with 3-0 victory, even madrid fans applaud in front of Ronaldinho’s magnificence. During Ronaldinho’s time culers were entertained by some legendary names such as E’to, Deco, Puyol. Ronaldino gave barca their lost global image back.

During Ronaldinho time something else was coming in picture as well. La Masia had produced a few gems. Xavi, Iniesta and Messi. This modern era of barca, “the golden era” under Pep Guardiola as a manager began in 2008. Renowned as best manager in the history of barcelona ‘Josep Guardiola’ managed barca for only 4 seasons but won many titles during this period. He began his managerial carrer at Barca B team in 2007 then promoted to senior team. During his first season as a manager Pep managed barca to their first treble in Spanish history. In 2008-09 season barca won Champions League, Laliga, copa del rey and became first Spanish team to do so. In 2009-10 season Zlatan Ibrahimovich arrived during this season Barca won 6 trophies becoming first team in history to do so. In 2010-11 season pep won his second UCL. His time at barca came to an end after 4 seasons and 14 trophies most by any manager to this day for barca.

During pep’s time Messi evolved rapidly. Pep was like catalyst for Messi. He won his first ballon d’Or under pep in year 2009 then in 2011,2012. During 2009’s ballon d’Or Xavi and Iniesta were 3rd and 4th respectively. Pep promoted busquets from B team and thus legendary mid-field of Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta took shape. Pep created many club legends such as Pique, Dani Alves, David Villa. Pep reintroduced and reformed Tiki-Taka which is to this day considered magical way of playing football.

Even after pep Messi continued to evolve and evolve be better and better until eventually he was crowned greatest of all time by many pundits.

In 2013 Brazilian wonderkid Neymar joined barca. Neymar was at the club for 4 seasons where he scored 105 goals in 186 appearances.

In 2014 Luis Suarez joined Barcelona. Considered one of the best strikers of his generation. Front trio of Messi-Suarez-Neymar is regarded as greatest attacking trio of Barca. Suarez was best number 9 for barca. He scored 209 goals in 304 matches for the catalan side in only 6 seasons. He left club in 2020 for Athletico Madrid.

In 2014 Luis Enrique re-joined barca a manager. During his first season as the first team manager Barca won their second domestic treble became only club to win the treble 2 times. His spell came to an end after 9 titles in three years.

In 2021 cules had to say bitter goodbye to club legend Lio Messi. Since his debut in 2004 for barca Messi scored 672 goals (most in Barcelona’s history by single player), he won 7 ballon d’Or also most in history, he won 35 titles with barca also most in club history. Messi’s will be arguably the best football player in football history but he’s definitely best football player in barca’s history.

In recent times Xavi came back as a manager in 2021 and barca won League title for 2022-23 season after 3 seasons going without winning it. In meantime club said farewells to many club legends such as Dani Alves, Pique, Busquets, Jordi Alba. Barca is eager to gain their lost respect at European stage back and club continues to work towards that.
