Hansi Flick has opted for a shock defensive choice as he finalises his plans for the crucial El Clasico against Real Madrid.
The fixture arrives packed with immense pressure, high-octane drama, and crucial tactical dilemmas.
Ahead of the high-profile showdown, a major pre-match development has sent shockwaves through the capital, with marquee Thibaut Courtois officially ruled out of El Clásico vs Barcelona in a last-minute injury blow.
The absence of this key figure significantly alters the visiting side’s plans, giving the Catalan outfit an unexpected opening to exploit.
However, the hosts are dealing with their own considerable selection headaches. Reports indicate that the Barcelona manager is preparing to repeat the exact same defensive setup that faltered in their recent UEFA Champions League outing against Paris Saint-Germain.
That European night ended in a bruising 4-2 defeat, exposing vulnerabilities that left the backline heavily criticized.
With crucial defensive personnel sidelined due to long-term injuries, manager Hansi Flick has been left with very little room for experimentation as he faces the daunting task of containing Los Blancos’ elite frontline.
According to journalist Alfredo Martinez, young prospect Xavi Espart is expected to retain his spot at right-back after showing flashes of resilience and even getting on the scoresheet in Paris.
Alongside him, Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martin are slated to marshal the central defensive partnership, while experienced full-back Joao Cancelo will anchor the left side.
While repeating this back-four unit provides a degree of tactical continuity following their continental test, it also carries inherent risks.
The defensive line will need to show a vastly improved level of concentration and collective organisation to shut down Real Madrid’s blistering counter-attacks, making this strategic choice one of the defining storylines of the match.
