Arsenal have identified a Barcelona defender as a prime January target and are ready to pursue a shock winter transfer.
The North London club is keeping close tabs on the player’s increasingly difficult situation in Catalonia, where reduced playing time has raised questions over his long-term role.
With the Gunners eager to fortify their tactical versatility on the flanks for a demanding second half of the campaign, an opportunity to test the Spanish club’s stance could materialize as early as January.
The Barcelona defender attracting strong interest from Arsenal is Spanish international Alejandro Balde, as reported by Diario Sport.
The 22-year-old La Masia graduate entered the season hoping to solidify his spot in the starting XI, but he has struggled for regular minutes under manager Hansi Flick.
Having seen his game time severely curtailed across the opening stretch of matches, Balde’s surrounding camp is growing increasingly open to exploring outside options.
Arsenal view the highly dynamic left-back as a natural fit for Arteta’s fluid system, which values quick overlapping runs, technical control, and tactical flexibility across defensive lines.
From Barcelona’s perspective, Balde remains a highly valued product of their youth academy and retains close ties with key squad figures.
However, the club’s ongoing salary-cap constraints and delicate economic reality mean no non-essential player is entirely untouchable.
If a suitable proposal arrives during the winter market, Catalan directors could be persuaded to sanction a deal, freeing up vital wage budget to address other pressing squad needs.
For Arsenal, acquiring a defender of Balde’s pedigree would add immense depth and European experience to their defensive unit.
As the January window draws closer, all eyes will be on whether Arsenal translate their preliminary interest into a concrete offer or if Balde can regain his starting role in Catalonia.
