Royal Antwerp have officially signed a Barcelona defender for €3.5 million, bringing proven quality to their defensive department.
FC Barcelona’s deadline day activity has brought further moves across the club’s defensive ranks, with the administration finalizing an outgoing agreement for one of their promising academy defenders.
As sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick look to streamline the squad and adhere strictly to La Liga’s economic constraints, the Blaugrana technical office has remained active in sanctioning departures for youth prospects needing guaranteed first-team minutes.
According to the official Barcelona statement, Barcelona reached a total agreement with Royal Antwerp for the permanent transfer of the young defender in exchange for a €3.5 million fee.
The left-footed center-back, sealing his departure from Spotify Camp Nou after five years, is 21-year-old Álvaro Cortés.
In addition to the initial financial sum, Barcelona have protected their long-term interests by retaining a percentage clause on any future sale involving the player.
Having arrived at La Masia in 2021 from Real Zaragoza’s youth system, Cortés steadily progressed through the developmental ranks and established himself as a central fixture for Barça Atlètic following a loan spell at CF Damm.
His continuous growth earned him a competitive first-team debut under Flick in May 2026, where he completed the full 90 minutes in central defense.
However, given the fierce competition in the senior backline, the player opted for a new challenge in the Belgian Pro League to secure consistent starting minutes.
At Royal Antwerp, Cortés is expected to take on an immediate role in their defensive setup, bringing elite tactical composure and ball-playing abilities learned during his tenure in Catalunya.
For Barcelona, the transaction represents another valuable youth sale that yields pure profit while maintaining economic hooks into the player’s potential future resale value.
With all documentation officially signed and approved by both clubs, the Spanish defender embarks on his new journey in Belgium.
