Not every La Masia story ends in a first-team breakthrough, and Toni Fernandez’s next chapter looks set to be written in Germany rather than Catalonia.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder is understood to be closing in on a move to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, bringing an end to his development at Barcelona, as per Albert Fernandez on X.
It’s a departure that carries a touch of history with it, given Toni Fernandez once made headlines as the second-youngest player ever to debut for Barcelona’s first team.
He came off the bench against Barbastro in the Copa del Rey back in January 2025, aged just 16 years, five months and 17 days, setting up a chance for Ansu Fati within moments of his introduction.
Fernandez joined La Masia from Espanyol back in 2018 and quickly built a reputation as one of the academy’s most versatile talents, comfortable playing anywhere across the front line and through the middle.
He also became the youngest player to score for Barca Atletic, netting with a spectacular bicycle kick against Ourense while still only 16.
Hansi Flick has continued to include him in first-team pre-season for three consecutive summers, a mark of the regard in which the German coach holds him.
That trust, though, was never going to translate into regular senior football this season, with Barcelona’s attacking midfield options stacked with the likes of Dani Olmo, Fermin Lopez and Gavi all competing for the same territory.
With a route to consistent first-team football effectively closed off in Catalonia, Bayer Leverkusen have emerged as the frontrunners to give Fernandez the platform he needs.
The Bundesliga has increasingly become a landing spot of choice for La Masia graduates seeking regular minutes away from Barcelona’s crowded midfield, and Leverkusen’s track record of developing young talent under recent coaching regimes will hold obvious appeal.
Fernandez leaves as one of the more decorated academy products of his generation at Barcelona, and whether this move to Germany proves the making of his career will likely become one of the more closely watched subplots of La Masia’s next crop.
