Barcelona’s defensive planning has taken an unexpected twist after one of the club’s most admired young centre-backs committed his future elsewhere.

Hansi Flick has made no secret of wanting greater long-term stability at the heart of his defence, particularly with the club still searching for a successor to veteran defender Inigo Martinez.

One name had consistently been viewed as the ideal candidate.

However, that option has now disappeared.

Real Sociedad have officially confirmed that Jon Martin has signed a new long-term contract, ending Barcelona’s hopes of pursuing the highly-rated Spanish defender.

The Basque outfit announced the extension across their social media platforms, revealing the 20-year-old has committed himself to the club until the end of the 2031/32 season.

His previous agreement has therefore been extended by an additional year.

Martin’s renewal comes as a significant boost for Real Sociedad, who already regard the youngster as one of the cornerstones of their long-term project.

Despite still being only 20 years old, he has already cemented himself as a regular starter while emerging as the leader of the club’s defensive unit.

Barcelona had been strongly linked with the defender in recent months as they continued evaluating options to strengthen the back line.

For many supporters, Martin appeared to be the standout candidate to eventually replace Inigo Martinez at the heart of Flick’s defence.

Interest was not limited to Catalonia.

Real Madrid were also credited with closely monitoring the defender, with both Spanish giants attracted by his rapid development and long-term potential.

Martin’s reported €60 million release clause had not discouraged interest either, despite the increasingly inflated transfer market.

Instead, Real Sociedad have moved decisively to remove any uncertainty surrounding his future.

The contract extension now effectively closes the door on what had become one of Barcelona’s most closely followed defensive pursuits, leaving the Catalan club to continue exploring alternative options as Flick’s search for defensive reinforcements goes on.
