Barcelona continue to keep one eye on the future as the club looks to strengthen its squad with some of Europe’s brightest emerging talents.

The Catalan giants have made youth recruitment a major priority in recent years, regularly monitoring teenage stars who could eventually make the step into the first team.

Not every transfer target, however, ends up arriving at the club.

Several promising youngsters have slipped through Barca’s grasp despite attracting serious interest from the Blaugrana hierarchy.

One of those names has now officially chosen a different path.

Barcelona have missed out on highly-rated Portuguese winger Cardoso Varela, with the 17-year-old completing a return to FC Porto after leaving Dinamo Zagreb.

Cardoso Varela had been on Barcelona’s radar for some time as part of the club’s long-term recruitment plans, with the teenager viewed as one of Portugal’s standout attacking prospects.

Reports previously suggested a move to Spotify Camp Nou was a genuine possibility, with Barca believing he possessed the potential to develop into a future first-team player.

Despite the admiration, negotiations never advanced beyond the scouting phase.

The biggest obstacle proved to be the youngster’s complicated contractual situation, alongside disputes surrounding his earlier departure from Portuguese football.

Those issues ultimately made any potential agreement increasingly difficult to complete.

Barcelona eventually stepped away from the operation, leaving the door open for Porto to bring one of their former academy talents back to the club.

The Portuguese side have now officially confirmed Varela’s return, ending months of speculation surrounding his future and closing the chapter on any immediate switch to Barcelona.

Although the Blaugrana will continue searching for elite young talent across Europe, Varela is one name who will no longer be on that shortlist after deciding his future lies back in Portugal.
