Barcelona’s preparations for future editions of the Joan Gamper Trophy have sparked plenty of excitement among supporters, especially with the possibility of iconic figures returning to the club.

The annual fixture has often been used as a special occasion to celebrate Barça’s history while introducing the squad ahead of a new season.

Recent speculation suggested that the club could welcome Lionel Messi back to Catalonia with his current team Inter Miami potentially involved in the 2027 edition of the traditional curtain-raiser.

However, those reports have now been played down.

According to AS, sources close to Inter Miami have indicated that there have been no discussions between the MLS side and Barcelona regarding a possible appearance at the Gamper Trophy.

The American club has reportedly confirmed there have been no formal talks, informal negotiations, or proposals exchanged over making the trip to Barcelona.

That means the idea of Messi returning to play at the newly renovated Spotify Camp Nou remains only speculation at this stage.

Barcelona are still working on finalising opponents for their upcoming pre-season events, with this summer’s Gamper fixture also requiring a decision.

The Catalan giants are reportedly in advanced discussions with Ajax over appearing in the latest edition of the competition after RB Leipzig were ruled out due to scheduling issues.

For Barça fans, the dream of seeing Messi back in the famous stadium remains a possibility for another time, but there is currently no agreement in place with Inter Miami.

The club will now continue focusing on completing their pre-season plans as they prepare for another important campaign under Hansi Flick.
