Barcelona’s summer transfer strategy has involved balancing ambition with financial reality, and nowhere has that challenge become clearer than in defence.
While the club continue searching for players capable of fitting Hansi Flick’s long-term vision, certain targets have proven increasingly difficult to pursue as negotiations develop.
One defender, in particular, had emerged internally as an ideal profile for the style Barcelona want to implement moving forward.
But recent developments now suggest that move may be slipping away completely.
Barcelona have suffered a setback in their hopes of signing Alessandro Bastoni after Inter Milan president Giuseppe Marotta publicly addressed the defender’s future.
For months, Bastoni had been viewed as one of the standout options to strengthen Barcelona’s backline, with sporting director Deco believed to be a strong admirer of the Italian international’s profile.
The defender’s composure in possession, tactical intelligence and ability to operate comfortably in a progressive system reportedly made him one of the preferred candidates for Flick’s evolving defensive structure.
However, despite the sporting appeal of the move, financial complications quickly became a major obstacle.
Inter consistently signalled that any deal involving Alessandro Bastoni would require a massive transfer fee, with reports in Italy regularly placing his valuation around the €70 million mark.
Over recent weeks, signs that the operation was slowing down had already started to emerge, and Marotta has now effectively confirmed that Inter have little intention of allowing the player to leave.
“We are not, in principle, sellers. If a player leaves, it is he who has expressed a desire to leave. I must say that Bastoni has not expressed a desire to leave.”
“He is happy here and we have no need to sell him. I think he will stay with us for the time being,” he said, as per Sport.
Those comments are likely to be viewed inside Barcelona as a major indication that any realistic pursuit of Bastoni may now need to be abandoned unless circumstances change dramatically later in the transfer window.
For Barcelona, the situation once again highlights the difficulties of competing for elite-level targets while still managing financial restrictions and squad planning at the same time.
Although Bastoni may have represented an ideal fit on a tactical level, Inter’s stance, combined with the player’s apparent desire to remain in Italy, has made the operation increasingly unrealistic as things stand.
