Barcelona’s commitment to youth development remains one of the defining pillars of the club’s long-term strategy, with La Masia continuing to produce some of the most closely watched prospects in European football.

Even as the first team navigates the demands of competing at the highest level, the academy structure remains a constant source of focus and investment.

The club’s ability to identify and secure emerging talent early is seen as crucial to maintaining its footballing identity.

That philosophy has now been reinforced once again.

Barcelona have officially tied down one of their most highly rated academy midfielders, as 16-year-old Hugo Garces has signed his first professional contract with the club.

Garces’ development has been carefully managed within the Barcelona system, having first arrived at La Masia at U-10 level.

Since then, he has steadily progressed through the age groups, earning a strong reputation internally as one of the most promising players of his generation.

This season, the midfielder featured prominently for the Barcelona U-16 side, where he established himself as a key figure in the team’s setup.

His consistency and influence in midfield have not gone unnoticed by coaches within the academy structure, who continue to view him as a player with significant long-term potential.

His rise has also been reflected at international level.

Earlier this month, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed that Hugo Garces has been included in the Spain U-17 squad for their preparations ahead of the U-17 European Championships, a clear indication of his growing standing within his age group across the country.

Barcelona confirmed the renewal with an official statement, which read: “The player Hugo Garces has signed, in the presence of the Director of Youth Football, Jose Ramon Alexanco, to continue with the Club during his youth career,”

The club also added a message of appreciation to his family, stating: “Thank you, Garces-Lagunas family, for trusting La Masia with your son’s development as a player and a person.”

As the club continues to balance immediate first-team ambitions with long-term planning, Garces’ renewal represents another step in reinforcing the pipeline that has defined Barcelona’s identity for decades.
