Lamine Yamal has released a powerful public statement following the upsetting atmosphere that surrounded Spain’s draw against Egypt.

The 18‑year‑old Barcelona wonderkid took to social media to voice his disgust at the racist and Islamophobic chants aimed at the Egyptian national team during the match, making it clear that such behaviour has no place in football.

His comments have since sparked renewed debate about discrimination in Spanish stadiums and the responsibility of fans, federations, and clubs alike.

What made Yamal’s stance stand out is that the abuse was not directed at him personally, but at the Egyptian side and, by extension, the wider Muslim community, as per the official Lamine Yamal Instagram page.

Lamine Yamal, who is a practicing Muslim with Moroccan roots through his father, explicitly said that even though the chants were aimed at the opposition, he still felt the weight of the insult as a believer.

He called the behaviour “disgraceful and unacceptable,” condemning the use of religion as a tool for mockery inside a stadium and accusing those responsible of ignorance and racism.

Spanish authorities and the Royal Spanish Football Federation have already opened investigations into the Islamophobic and xenophobic chants heard in the first half of the game, while messages on the stadium screen warned fans to stop such behaviour at both half‑time and at the start of the second period.

Yamal’s intervention now adds a player ’s-eye view to that official response, putting extra pressure on the federation and local clubs to enforce stricter measures against discriminatory conduct.

For Barcelona, seeing one of their brightest stars take such a firm, principled stand reinforces his growing profile beyond the pitch.

Yamal’s willingness to speak out sends a clear message that he will not remain silent in the face of prejudice, even when it does not directly target him.
