Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s bid to reclaim his place at the top of Barcelona’s pecking order has hit a serious obstacle.

The German goalkeeper, who temporarily left Camp Nou in January to join Girona on loan, returned to Barcelona this week to continue his rehabilitation after suffering a significant hamstring injury, as reported by SPORT.

Ter Stegen’s move to Girona had been designed as a calculated step to regain match rhythm and push for first-team opportunities at both club and international level, especially ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

He featured in La Liga matches against Getafe and Oviedo, gradually building fitness and confidence, giving hope that he could return to Camp Nou as a contender for the number one spot.

But the momentum came to an abrupt halt when Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a serious injury to his left hamstring.

Medical evaluations have confirmed that he faces roughly two months on the sidelines, putting both his Girona loan spell and World Cup plans in jeopardy.

The timing could not have been worse for the 31-year-old, who had hoped to use regular minutes away from Barcelona to rebuild his form and reclaim his spot in Germany national team’s starting XI.

Sources close to the goalkeeper suggest the setback has been mentally challenging, with the interruption described as a “heavy blow” after months of effort to relaunch his career.

Ter Stegen is not letting the injury stall his progress.

Over the past week, he has been back at Barcelona’s Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, attending targeted recovery sessions under the supervision of the club’s medical and physiotherapy team.

The familiar environment, specialised equipment, and access to top-level support at Camp Nou are crucial as he works to return to full fitness.

Barcelona will be monitoring his progress closely, knowing that Ter Stegen’s experience and leadership remain key to their long-term plans between the posts.
