Barcelona’s long-term planning has quietly shifted into focus again as the club continues to scan the global market for elite young talent capable of shaping the next generation.

With financial restrictions still influencing recruitment at senior level, La Masia and youth-focused signings remain central to the club’s sporting strategy.

Recent months have shown a clear emphasis on identifying technically gifted midfielders who fit Barca’s positional play philosophy.

Competition across Europe for emerging South American prospects has also intensified, forcing Barcelona to move early when opportunities arise.

A low-profile visit to Catalonia has begun to attract serious attention behind the scenes.

Those whispers now centre on a teenage midfielder from Ecuador who has arrived in the city to undergo a short trial with the Catalan giants.

The player in question is Ederson Castillo, one of the most highly rated prospects currently emerging from Ecuadorian football, who is spending several days training under the watchful eye of Barcelona’s coaching staff.

The visit is not coincidental, with his representative also present in the city as discussions quietly gather momentum.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Castillo’s agent Peter Graetzer has travelled to Barcelona and is expected to hold talks with club officials during the youngster’s stay.

Graetzer effectively confirmed his presence by sharing a social media post from near Barcelona’s Ciutat Esportiva training base, a move that has only fuelled speculation about the club’s intentions.

His involvement is considered crucial, particularly given the level of interest surrounding the midfielder from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Barcelona are not operating in isolation, with Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Anderlecht all monitoring Castillo’s situation closely.

That level of competition underlines how highly the teenager is rated, despite his young age.

At just 17, Ederson Castillo has already made six competitive senior appearances for LDU Quito, showcasing maturity beyond his years in Ecuador’s top flight.

Primarily deployed as a central midfielder, Castillo is known for his physical presence, ball-winning ability and composure in possession, traits that have drawn comparisons to Chelsea and Ecuador star Moises Caicedo.

Those similarities have placed Barcelona on high alert as they look to reinforce their youth ranks with players who can eventually transition into the first-team environment.
