Celtic close in on signing former Barcelona full-back as Scottish giants prepare January swoop for experienced defender.

The 24-year-old Mexico international, who rose through LA Galaxy and La Masia before his Barcelona stint, has featured minimally at the Vitality Stadium—just one appearance and a red card in the Carabao Cup—prompting Bournemouth’s willingness to loan him out for regular minutes ahead of the World Cup cycle.

This move aligns with Celtic’s urgent need for right-sided reinforcement, where current options like Alistair Johnston (injured) and Anthony Ralston (repurposed centrally) leave gaps, forcing wingers into makeshift roles.

That player is Julian Araujo, the former Barcelona right-back adored by Xavi during his time at the Camp Nou, as reported by the BBC.

Signed by Barca for €5 million in 2023 after excelling at LA Galaxy, Araujo impressed on loan at UD Las Palmas in La Liga before Bournemouth splashed €10 million to acquire him last summer.

Xavi praised his adaptation, strength, power, and long-range shooting potential, insisting he could become a key asset.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola acknowledges Araujo’s quality but cites competition from Adam Smith and new signing Alex Jimenez as reasons for his bench role, urging the hardworking defender to persist.

Celtic’s interest stems from Nancy’s prior MLS exposure to Araujo at Columbus Crew and CF Montreal, where the wing-back shone.

Reports indicate Bournemouth now expects the deal to materialize, with Celtic close to their first January signing.

This acquisition would bolster Celtic’s Premiership title defense after a rocky start under Nancy, who has steadied the ship with recent wins.

Araujo’s pace, crossing, and versatility fit seamlessly into Nancy’s setup, potentially transforming their flanks.

As negotiations progress, Celtic eyes further additions like a right-sided center-back and winger to fuel their domestic dominance.
