Barcelona’s focus has been split in recent weeks as Hansi Flick’s side battles through an exhausting injury crisis, a congested fixture list, and off-field distractions surrounding the club’s long-term future.
While performances on the pitch have improved, the political landscape off it is rapidly heating up.
Joan Laporta, the current club president, has been under increasing scrutiny, with growing divisions among supporters and influential figures behind the scenes.
Financial recovery, sporting direction, and the identity of the club remain central talking points as the 2026 presidential elections draw closer.
With speculation already circulating about potential challengers, one familiar name has emerged from across the Atlantic, a figure whose voice could redefine Barcelona’s future.
According to a report from ABC, Lionel Messi has made it clear that he intends to take part in next year’s FC Barcelona presidential elections in some capacity.
While the Argentine legend will not run for the presidency himself, he is reportedly considering supporting one of the candidates to challenge incumbent Joan Laporta.
However, the Inter Miami forward is not willing to back just anyone, Lionel Messi will only throw his support behind a candidate with a realistic chance of winning.
The 2026 elections are expected to take place between 15 March and 15 June, with Laporta already confirming his intention to seek re-election.
But this time, he faces an unexpected rival in the form of his former captain.
Four and a half years ago, Messi publicly supported Laporta, even voting in person alongside his son Thiago.
Yet, this time the situation could not be more different.
The report claims Messi has not forgotten how he was forced to leave Barcelona in 2021 after Laporta’s reversal on his contract renewal, an act viewed by the player and his family as a betrayal.
Although Laporta plans to bid farewell to Messi in a ceremonial manner, the Argentinian looks to want revenge.
Several Barcelona figures have since reached out to gauge Messi’s willingness to become involved in the elections.
His response reportedly indicated he is open to doing so, but not in support of Laporta.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner could instead back an alternative candidate, possibly waiting until the decisive stages of the campaign to make his move.
Among the potential challengers are Victor Font, Joan Camprubi Montal, Xavi Vilajoana, and Marc Ciria, each with their own vision for the club’s future.
If Messi does step in, his influence could tip the balance of power at the Camp Nou once again, this time not with his feet, but with his voice.
