Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, has shared insights on the club’s plans for a Robert Lewandowski successor.

With a veteran striker leading the charge and a versatile winger adapting to a central role, the club faces decisions about balancing experience with long-term planning.

Speculation has linked Barcelona to blockbuster names like Erling Haaland, especially as their current star nears 37, but the club’s sporting director has now weighed in, offering clarity on their transfer philosophy and priorities amidst a season marked by injury challenges and youth development.

In an interview with Catalunya Ràdio’s Tot Costa, reported by Mundo Deportivo, Deco dismissed the urgency of signing a traditional No. 9 to replace Robert Lewandowski.

“We shouldn’t be obsessed with signing a No. 9; you might end up making a mistake,” he said, emphasizing that modern football doesn’t necessitate a conventional striker.

He highlighted Ferran Torres’ adaptability, noting, “Ferran can play as a No. 9,” and urged focus on internal growth over market splashes.

Deco also sidestepped talks of Lewandowski’s contract renewal, saying, “We’re not going to talk about renewals in October,” praising the 37-year-old’s 40-plus goals but prioritizing squad recovery.

Deco’s stance reflects Barcelona’s cautious approach, driven by financial constraints and confidence in their current roster.

He underscored the value of retaining and renewing young talents like Pedri and Lamine Yamal, equating these to major signings.

“Many clubs would love to have these players,” he noted, signaling a preference for nurturing homegrown stars over chasing external targets.

With injuries to key players like Gavi and Lamine Yamal testing squad depth, Deco’s focus is on stability, stating, “We have a championship-level team that still needs to improve.”

Looking ahead, Barcelona seems unlikely to pursue a new striker in January, with any decision deferred to summer 2026, contingent on Lewandowski and Torres’ performances.

Deco’s measured approach—calm market navigation and faith in the squad—aims to sustain Barcelona’s competitive edge while safeguarding their financial recovery.

As Hansi Flick’s side chases La Liga and Champions League glory, Deco’s words signal a club prioritizing resilience and youth over a hasty No. 9 hunt.
