Barcelona’s summer transfer strategy continues to dominate headlines, with Deco and the sporting department working tirelessly to provide Hansi Flick the reinforcements he needs.
The Catalan giants recently registered Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford, and efforts remain ongoing to secure further signings despite La Liga’s financial restrictions.
Yet, while the club explores ways to strengthen their squad, it appears not every player is willing to be swayed by the Blaugrana badge.
This summer has already seen frustrations for the Barcelona hierarchy, with priority target Nico Williams choosing loyalty over glamour.
Now, the club has been dealt another rejection — this time from one of Bilbao’s most promising midfielders.
Athletic Bilbao star Mikel Jauregizar has made his stance crystal clear when asked about the possibility of joining Barcelona in the future.
The 21-year-old, who has established himself as a key part of Ernesto Valverde’s midfield alongside Ruiz de Galarreta, has ruled out any move to Catalunya.
“I’m happy to play 90 minutes and pleased with my performance,” Mikel Jauregizar said after his latest outing, as per AS.
When pressed on the prospect of Barcelona attempting to lure him, his response was blunt: “I would say no.”
For Jauregizar, loyalty to Athletic comes before anything else.
He pointed to Nico Williams as the example to follow, praising his teammate’s decision to turn down Barcelona’s advances earlier this summer.
“You can see how proud we are and how much we want to play for Athletic and in this project,” the midfielder added.
Barcelona know all too well the feeling of rejection.
Nico Williams had been a top target for the club, with talks advancing positively earlier in the summer.
At one stage, confidence was high that he would swap Bilbao for Barcelona.
However, in a dramatic turn, Nico instead opted for stability and penned a lucrative long-term extension with Athletic until 2031 — a major blow to Flick’s rebuilding plans.
For Barcelona, Jauregizar’s firm words underline the challenge ahead.
While the club’s history, prestige, and global appeal remain unmatched, the reality is that not every talented young player is willing to abandon loyalty, identity, and security for the glamour of Camp Nou.
