Barcelona’s pre-season is soon to be underway, with Hansi Flick and players reporting back for testing and tactical groundwork.
As the club look to fine-tune their squad ahead of their first summer friendlies, uncertainty remains over several positions—none more so than in goal, where changes are already unfolding.
The Blaugrana made an early splash by triggering the release clause of young shot-stopper Joan Garcia, signalling the start of a new era between the sticks.
But a key figure from last season’s dramatic title-winning run is sticking around longer than most expected.
Barcelona have confirmed that Wojciech Szczesny will remain at the club, after the veteran goalkeeper signed a new two-year contract until 2027—just one week after his original deal expired.
Wojciech Szczesny, 35, had initially retired before being lured back into action last season to provide cover following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s long-term knee injury in September.
He started out on the bench but forced his way into the starting lineup by January, playing a key role in Barcelona’s domestic treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
Barcelona officially confirmed the contract extension on Monday, with manager Flick praising Szczesny’s leadership, dressing room influence, and strong rapport with supporters.
Despite his renewal, Szczesny is expected to move into a backup role, with Joan Garcia widely tipped to be Flick’s first-choice keeper heading into the new campaign.

That leaves Barcelona with four senior goalkeepers under contract—Garcia, Szczesny, ter Stegen, and Inaki Peña—although more movement is likely.
Pena, who started much of last season until January, is set to depart despite still having a year left on his contract.
The bigger question mark hovers over ter Stegen.
Barcelona are understood to be open to offloading the German international, but the player appears determined to stay and fight for his place.
With Flick overseeing a new chapter at Camp Nou, Szczesny’s extension signals both stability and transition—as the club reshapes its goalkeeping future.
Unfinished Business.
