Barcelona is going through considerable changes as the club is likely to begin receiving offers for a pivotal fixture of the team, which has been at the club for years.
Recently, it was reported that the Catalan club is changing their approach to goalkeeping, looking to promote a young player or two to their number one goalkeeping spot, as well as provide some additional financial capability for the 2025/26 season.
The decision has generated a lot of interest from leading clubs across Europe, looking to capitalize on securing the services of a consummate professional who has played a key role at the Camp Nou for numerous seasons, as per Mundo Deportivo.
The player in question is Marc-Andre ter Stegen – the team captain and an immensely solid goalkeeper.
It’s worth noting that Ter Stegen is only 33 years old; however, he possesses proven experience and a great deal of consistency, which has only cultivated tremendously intense interest from the elite clubs.
AC Milan is firmly in contention, putting Ter Stegen as a higher-end replacement for a reported future Chelsea goalkeeper, Mike Maignan.
Manchester City is also reported to be in the race to sign Ter Stegen as a reliable replacement for Ederson, who has constantly found himself on the sidelines due to continued injuries.
Lastly, Paris Saint-Germain is also interested in the situation as Gianluigi Donnarumma, the now PSG goalkeeper, is in an awkward position regarding his future contract.
Juventus and Newcastle United are also options, though Juventus do not seem to be pursuing a new goalkeeper as strongly.
Ter Stegen has a contract that runs until 2028, which makes the situation more complicated, although Ter Stegen’s apparent displeasure with Barcelona’s indecision regarding his future may push him toward a move.
Barcelona’s decision to focus more on Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny’s re-signing is a slap in the face to Ter Stegen, highlighting how less important he has become.
The club would like him to leave amicably; however, this has become very tense on both sides in light of Ter Stegen feeling stabbed in the back by the club for leaking information.
As the summer transfer window approaches, these five teams will likely compete for the signature of a goalkeeper who undoubtedly has a place in Barcelona’s history, yet is their past.
