The sporting director for Barcelona, Deco, has gotten fans excited with hints about the plans for the upcoming summer transfer window.
After winning a domestic treble in the 2024-25 season with Hansi Flick in charge, it is time for the club to turn its attention to strengthening the team with new additions in place before they embark on future seasons.
Barcelona is still operating without a sustainable path to changing its current financial situation, although the director indicated that plans are in place to sign players and strengthen the squad.
Some of the targets that were mentioned by Deco in the interview with Catalan radio station RAC1 included Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, Bayer Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo if Gerard Martin leaves, and free agent Ivan Perisic.
Garcia, the 24-year-old shot-stopper, would be targeted as a long-term successor for Marc-André ter Stegen in goal.
Diaz’s skill and pace certainly warrant being a top target to improve the forward line.
Grimaldo, who is a La Masia graduate, may be sought after to add some pace and dynamism to the left-back option, and Perisic, a 36-year-old veteran, may provide an option and experience on a free transfer.
The transfer targets all fit firmly within Flick’s idea of having a balanced squad.
Nonetheless, there are complications when considering Barcelona’s financial constraints.
Diaz is complicated due to Liverpool’s rejection of their approach, Grimaldo’s transfer depends on whether Martin leaves for Wolves, Garcia’s €25 million is doable, but Perišić’s age means there are concerns about long-term value.
Deco is being pragmatic, operating in the market for budget signings, or taking care to incorporate buy-back clauses or loans.
The transfer window might be closing soon – there is anticipation for news about these targets, and it’ll be interesting to see how Barcelona evolves the squad while maintaining their place at the top of La Liga.
