Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has firmly dismissed speculation linking the club with a € 100 m-rated star, reaffirming their trust in the current talisman.
Deco stated to the press, the club is happy with the squad it has, especially in the striker position; therefore, there is no justification for a replacement/another name, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
With financial limitations, and with a recent situation with the clubs balance sheet revealing no room for acquisitions going forward, simply relying on the squad that we now have to start the season does not seemingly offer as much risk to our aims, in terms of next season and looking ahead, given the challenges that Barcelona has faced on and off the field.
The player in question is Budapest’s Viktor Gyökeres.
Viktor is lit at Sporting CP, and is an up-and-coming striker, with only some top clubs in Europe sniffing around him.
Given the striker’s performance, especially in the striker position, there has even been more speculation about Gyökeres potentially leaving, and Barcelona is continually noted as a target team, although nothing concrete has materialized from these situations thus far.
However, Deco dispelled these rumors by bluntly stating that Gyökeres’ reports included a “great striker who did great things at Sporting.”
From Barcelona’s view, it is more about not looking to add or looking to substitute in that position.
This decision demonstrates Barcelona’s trust in their current attacking players and the caution of the transfer market.
Deco’s comments referred directly to Robert Lewandowski, their almost talismanic number 9, as the heart of their attack.
Though older, Lewandowski has continued to make world-class performances and to lead Barcelona’s attack with clinical finishing and presence.
Deco’s trust in the Polish star suggests the club sees him as the complete package and does not need a new striker.
For now and for the foreseeable future, it seems Barcelona will look to develop their young players, be prudent with their spending, and rely on Lewandowski to continue to lead them in the pursuit of trophies.
