A Barcelona goalkeeper has made the decision to leave the club this summer after seeking employment outside of Spain.
As a 26-year-old player in one of football’s most prestigious academies, La Masia, he has come to realize he will never play at Camp Nou and would like to be the first-choice keeper elsewhere.
With only a few months left on his contract, clubs from the Dutch Eredivisie, Portuguese Primeira Liga, or German Bundesliga are reported to be interested in giving him more first-team minutes, demonstrating his value and talent.
The player in question is Iñaki Peña, a technically skilled keeper where the only chance he has had only one chance: filling in for injured Marc-André ter Stegen or competing with a new signing, Wojciech Szczesny, for appearances in Spain’s top league, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
Despite having potential as a goalkeeper, Peña probably has not had as many minutes this season as he would have liked, and he now wants to make a move for more regular game time.
There was interest from clubs in Turkey, where he was loaned out to Galatasaray, although Peña is thought to prefer a move to a competitive European league leading up to the 2026 World Cup cycle.
Interest from Spanish teams, such as Celta Vigo and Sevilla, has come up, but Peña would prefer an international transfer.
Barcelona’s struggles financially and ongoing restructuring and downsizing by Hansi Flick may pave the way for Peña, as the goal is to ramp down the roster.
If he leaves, it will bring an end to a long ride with the Blaugrana, whom he joined as a youth as a teen.
As Peña prepares for what could be his last game against Villarreal, all eyes are on where this top prospect will go next.
With his youth, experience, and history from La Masia, Peña can be counted on as a productive player for any club that gives him the opportunity.
