The table is set for an exciting intercontinental battle as 2024 Copa América winners Argentina and UEFA Euro winners Spain will clash for the Finalissima 2026.
UEFA recently informed the two federations, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), that the Finalissima has been planned by CONMEBOL and UEFA at their Asuncioón, Paraguay, meeting.
The Finalissima, officially known as the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions, brings back the historically cherished Artemio Franchi Cup, last won by Argentina in 2022, and ended in a 3-0 win against Italy at Wembley.
This edition sees Argentina appear in their third (3rd) straight Finalissima in the path of Lionel Messi, who remains the heart and soul of a unique, dominant run.
Spain will look to carry on their example of play from reaching the final of Euro 2024 through young talent like Lamine Yamal.
The match will take place during the FIFA International Window, from March 23 to 31, 2026, just before the 2026 World Cup, as reported by Marca.
The Finalissima is also a metaphorical connection of the two continents and the commitment to competition from both confederations.
Though not yet officially announced, talks suggest it could take place in host cities like London, Rome, or New York, which is gaining support as an option in the run-up to the World Cup jointly hosted by the USA.
UEFA is still working through many logistical issues, including security arrangements, but they have also assured that details will be released, including tickets, soon, especially considering there will be fan organizations who will support the event.
Although there is a busy football calendar from now until March, including the FIFA Club World Cup, the window in March fits with Argentina having completed their World Cup qualifying plans and also Spain assuming they won’t have to go through the playoffs.
This dream match-up is much anticipated due to the clubs’ representation of generational talents and continued impactful histories.
