FC Barcelona could potentially win their 28th La Liga title tonight, without even stepping onto the pitch.
The Catalans, after their thrilling 4-3 victory over Real Madrid in the final El Clásico of the season, are seven points clear with three games to play.
The situation is quite simple: if Real Madrid loses or draws against Mallorca, Barcelona will become champions.
There is a lot of excitement, and fans of Barcelona have noted that even Mallorca’s draw would be sufficient because they have a better goal difference.
Mallorca is ninth and level on points with eighth placed Rayo Vallecano, and will be keen to take maximum points and make a claim for European places – meaning they won’t go down easy as they also contend with a team of Madrid that is shell shocked from 4 Clásico losses this season.
Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti was defiant, stating that his team has not given up.
However, the title now depends on winning all three matches and hoping that Barcelona drops points.
Barcelona will next play the Catalan derby against Espanyol, where if they win, they will also clinch the title if Real Madrid loses.
Flick, despite his side’s 4-3 win, acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football but encouraged his team that he couldn’t change the outcome, and they needed to keep their focus.
After they have already won the Super Cup and Copa del Rey, Barcelona are in a position to win a domestic treble.
All eyes will now turn to the clash between Mallorca and Madrid tonight, as anything less than a Madrid win will start the celebrations in Catalonia.
